Bee eaters are actually a group of birds, with most in Africa and Asia. These colorful African Bee Eaters can be found in South Africa.

This was a study for a larger painting done in gouache, an opaque version of watercolor.
I often combine transparent watercolor and gouache. Both offer beautiful brilliant colors with a soft mat finish.
Perfect to tuck into a backpack with a mini watercolor pad for field studies or anything!

A note about color; since not all animals can see a full spectrum of color, what seems obvious to humans may only register as shades of grey to some animals.
Some can only see red and green, while others different colors. All part of the survival of that species.
